Residential Project

This is a project that is highly important to me. In the summer of 2021, my dad and I had a conversation about how he would like to have a house designed for him to live in. He asked me if it was something that I would be willing to attempt. Of course I was willing to, and I was honored that he asked me to do this for him. I spent the next couple months working with him to design the house to his liking. At the end of the summer I had to come back to school and the project was put on hold, but we have continued to talk about it and it is a project that I will continue to work on for him.

The design for this house takes a lot of inspiration from the house that I grew up in my and my dad still lives in. The components of the design that he saw as the main priority were the bottom floor with the garage/shop area, and the windows. My dad is a very hands on person and he is constantly working on various projects. A garage/shop space is something that he as always wanted to have in order to assist him with his projects, but he hasn't had one in a long time. Therefore, this was the main element that he wanted me to incorporate into the design. Additionally, the windows were an important aspect of this design. This house is designed to be located in Fairplay, Colorado which has a cold climate. The large amount of windows and orientation of the house allows sunlight to naturally heat the space. Therefore, allowing him to spend less money on heat.

I started the process of this design by sketching out different concepts and discussing the overall design with my dad. After we had finalized the concept, I modeled it in Sketch-Up and took my base images from my model. I then took those images into Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to clean up and finalize them. The next steps in the process are to continue finalizing the design and complete the more technical aspects of the design process.
